William P. Gottlieb (1917, 2006) was an American photographer and journalist celebrated for his iconic documentation of the jazz music scene during its golden age in the 1940s. His black-and-white photographs of legendary musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Billie Holiday are considered definitive visual records of the bebop era. Gottlieb's work appeared in Down Beat magazine and The Washington Post, and his archive was donated to the Library of Congress, cementing his legacy as one of the foremost chroniclers of American jazz culture.
