Thomas Nozkowski

Thomas Nozkowski (1944, 2019) was an American abstract painter known for his intimate, small-scale canvases that blend personal experience, memory, and observation into richly inventive compositions. Working primarily in oil on Masonite, his paintings are characterized by idiosyncratic forms, vibrant color relationships, and a resolutely non-hierarchical approach to subject matter drawn from everyday life. He was widely regarded as one of the most original voices in American abstraction of his generation, influencing countless younger painters through his teaching at the Cooper Union and his prolific studio practice.
