Robert Heinecken (1931–2006) was an American artist who pioneered the concept of 'paraphotography,' manipulating and appropriating existing photographic imagery from mass media, magazines, and television to create works that challenged conventional notions of photography as a medium. Working with photograms, lithography, offset printing, and mixed media, he blurred the boundaries between photography, printmaking, and collage, often incorporating explicit or subversive imagery to critique consumer culture and media representation. He was a highly influential teacher at UCLA for over two decades, shaping generations of artists and helping to establish photography as a legitimate fine art form in academia.
