Marcus Junius Brutus (85, 42 BC) was a Roman politician, orator, and the most renowned of the conspirators who assassinated Julius Caesar on the Ides of March, 44 BC. After being adopted by a relative, he also carried the name Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus as his legal name. He has been immortalized in history, literature, and art as a symbol of both republican idealism and tragic betrayal.
