Leonaert Bramer was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in Delft in 1596, known for his small-scale nocturnal scenes, history paintings, and religious subjects rendered in a dramatic chiaroscuro style. He spent many years in Italy, particularly Rome, where he was influenced by Caravaggio and his followers, developing a distinctive dark and moody aesthetic. Bramer was a prolific draughtsman and one of the few contemporaries known to have been personally acquainted with Johannes Vermeer.
