Kim Whanki pioneered Korean abstract painting, creating lyrical compositions of dots and marks inspired by Korean landscape, moon jars, and traditional aesthetics. Working in New York from 1963, he developed his signature blue dot paintings that bridge Eastern philosophy and Western abstraction. His works hold auction records for Korean artists and are in major Korean museum collections.
