Jose Joya was a pioneering abstract expressionist painter who brought modernism to Philippine art. His gestural, colorful canvases combined Western abstraction with Filipino sensibility. He represented the Philippines at the Venice Biennale and his work is held by the National Museum of the Philippines and Cultural Center of the Philippines.
