Joan Colom (1921, 2017) was a pioneering Spanish street photographer celebrated for his raw, candid images of Barcelona's marginalized communities, particularly his seminal series documenting the Barrio Chino (El Raval) district in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His covert, humanistic approach, often shooting from the hip without looking through the viewfinder, captured the lives of prostitutes, migrants, and the urban poor with extraordinary intimacy and dignity. Colom is regarded as one of the most important figures in Spanish documentary photography and a key voice in the tradition of humanist street photography.
