Jefferson David Chalfant (1856, 1931) was an American realist painter celebrated for his extraordinary trompe l'oeil still lifes, often depicting currency, stamps, and everyday objects with photographic precision. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he later studied under Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia and spent time in Paris, refining his academic technique. He is also noted for his sensitive portrait work and genre scenes set in Delaware, where he spent much of his career.
