Jan Josefsz. van Goyen (1596, 1656) was a prolific Dutch Golden Age painter renowned for his atmospheric landscape paintings characterized by subdued tonal palettes of grays, greens, and browns. He was a leading master of the tonal phase of Dutch landscape painting, depicting rivers, dunes, windmills, and coastal scenes with remarkable economy and naturalism. Van Goyen was extraordinarily productive, creating over 1,200 paintings and 1,000 drawings that had significant influence on subsequent generations of Dutch landscape artists.
