Gerard van Spaendonck (1746, 1822) was a Dutch-French painter renowned for his exquisite floral still lifes, which brought him great acclaim at the French court and earned him the position of miniature painter to Louis XVI. He succeeded Jan Davidsz de Heem as keeper of the plant collection at the Jardin du Roi in Paris and later became a professor at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, where he profoundly influenced botanical illustration. His meticulously detailed compositions on vellum and canvas are celebrated for their luminosity and scientific precision, making them highly sought after at major auction houses worldwide.
