Emiliano di Cavalcanti (1897, 1976) was one of Brazil's most celebrated modernist painters, known for his vibrant depictions of Brazilian life, particularly the mulata figure, carnival scenes, and the everyday world of the working class. His style blended European modernist influences, including Cubism and Expressionism, absorbed during his time in Paris, with distinctly Brazilian themes, color, and sensuality. A key organizer of the landmark 1922 Modern Art Week in São Paulo, he played a foundational role in shaping Brazilian modernism.
