Elihu Vedder (1836, 1923) was an American Symbolist painter, illustrator, and poet best known for his haunting, mystical compositions blending classical, Egyptian, and fantastical imagery. He gained international acclaim for his illustrated edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1884), which became one of the most celebrated artist's books of the 19th century. Vedder spent much of his career in Rome, where he absorbed Mediterranean influences that permeated his allegorical and visionary works.
