David Wojnarowicz (1954, 1992) was a American painter, photographer, filmmaker, writer, and activist who emerged from the New York underground art scene of the 1980s. His raw, confrontational work addressed themes of AIDS, sexuality, poverty, and political marginalization, often combining text and image in a visceral, autobiographical style. He became one of the most important voices of his generation, channeling personal trauma and social outrage into a fiercely original body of work cut short by his death from AIDS-related complications at age 37.
