Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714, 1789) was a celebrated French painter renowned for his dramatic seascapes, harbor views, and coastal landscapes that blended Baroque grandeur with early Romantic sensibility. Trained in Rome, he spent nearly two decades in Italy absorbing the classical tradition and the influence of masters such as Claude Lorrain, before returning to France where he was commissioned by Louis XV to paint a monumental series of French seaports. His works were highly sought after during his lifetime and continue to command strong prices at auction, particularly his storm scenes and moonlit marine compositions.
