Birger Sandzén was a Swedish-American painter and printmaker known for his vibrant, expressive landscapes of the American West, particularly the Rocky Mountains and the plains of Kansas. He studied under Anders Zorn and Puvis de Chavannes in Europe before emigrating to the United States in 1894, where he spent most of his career teaching at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. His bold brushwork and vivid color palette, influenced by Post-Impressionism, made him one of the most distinctive regional artists of the early 20th century.
