Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne was a Dutch Golden Age painter, draughtsman, and poet born in 1589 in Delft. He is best known for his allegorical grisaille paintings depicting peasant life, beggars, and proverbs, as well as his finely detailed polychrome early works often featuring courtly and religious subjects. Van de Venne also gained recognition as an accomplished book illustrator, notably for the works of Jacob Cats.
