Heart in Hand
2014
A monumental sculpture by Ursula von Rydingsvard, 'Heart in Hand' (2014) is constructed from hundreds of stacked and carved cedar beam segments coated with graphite, resulting in a towering, geological-looking form with a sweeping curvilinear protrusion. The work reads simultaneously as organic and architectural — evoking ancient rock formations, human anatomy, and natural growth cycles. Imposing in scale at over 10 feet tall, it exemplifies von Rydingsvard's signature method of laminating cedar beams and hand-carving the surface to reveal deeply tactile, rhythmic textures. This wood model is a key example of her 'states of becoming' body of work, balancing monumental presence with an undercurrent of fragility and vulnerability.
