Smith / Johnson / Williams / Jones
2012
Four mirrored panels bear the weight of common surnames—Smith, Johnson, Williams, Jones—rendered through silkscreen printing that simultaneously reflects and obscures the viewer's own image. Fischer plays with ideas of identity and anonymity, using the most ubiquitous of American surnames to question individuality against the cool, industrial precision of aluminum and polished glass. The work's fragmented four-part structure echoes the collective nature of shared names, dissolving the self into a broader, impersonal taxonomy.
