Trossell's House, Battle-Field of Gettysburg
1863
Taken shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg, this photograph shows a civilian home that became an unwilling witness to one of the war's bloodiest encounters. The juxtaposition of domestic architecture against the battlefield context powerfully illustrates how war disrupted everyday American life.
