jpeg vs01
Thomas Ruff's *jpeg vs01* is a large-scale digital chromogenic print, face-mounted to Plexiglas, in which the artist deliberately exploits the visual artifacts of JPEG compression to create a pixelated, mosaic-like image of a volcanic or disaster landscape. By enlarging low-resolution internet-sourced imagery to monumental proportions, Ruff transforms digital degradation into an aesthetic phenomenon, blurring the boundary between abstraction and representation. The work challenges our perception of photographic truth in an age of mass digital circulation, questioning the reliability and integrity of images mediated through technology.
