No Title (Above all, for the sense of exteriority and control that lie latent there; and for the feeling of freedom that comes from paying the rent)
2003
Raymond Pettibon's ink on paper work pairs his characteristically urgent, hand-drawn imagery with a dense block of text that meditates on the paradoxical nature of domesticity and autonomy. The work explores how the mundane act of paying rent becomes a site of psychological tension, where confinement and freedom coexist in an uneasy equilibrium. True to Pettibon's practice, the relationship between word and image destabilizes any singular reading, inviting the viewer into an open-ended loop of literary and visual association.
