A lustrous single cultured pearl nestles within a cast form of sugar and Vitatex epoxy resin, suspended delicately on a satin ribbon in this intimate object by Matthew Barney. Created as an edition for Parkett, the work merges bodily and industrial materials with an almost alchemical sensibility, transforming sweetness and artifice into a sculptural jewel-like artifact. The juxtaposition of organic and synthetic substances reflects Barney's ongoing fascination with transformation, biological process, and the boundaries between the natural and the fabricated.
