A lush and dynamic study rendered in oil on paper, this work by Kehinde Wiley presents a regal Black figure posed in the tradition of European equestrian portraiture, reclaiming a genre historically reserved for white aristocracy and nobility. Rich, jewel-toned colors and Wiley's signature flattened, decorative patterning imbue the composition with both opulence and cultural tension. As a preparatory study, the work offers an intimate glimpse into the artist's process of recontextualizing power, identity, and representation within the canon of Western art history.
