TRANSpaintings (gay guerrilla) / Upright Brackets
2024
Suspended on monofilament polyester mesh rather than conventional canvas, "TRANSpaintings (gay guerrilla) / Upright Brackets" achieves a luminous, almost atmospheric presence in which layers of ink and acrylic seem to float independently of one another. Completed in 2024, the large-scale work measures 274.3 x 213.4 centimeters and benefits enormously from its unconventional support, which allows light to pass through the surface and activates the composition from multiple angles. Mehretu's characteristic vocabularies of gestural mark-making, architectural notation, and fragmented cartographic systems collide here with a charged political consciousness embedded directly in the title, referencing both trans identity and the legacy of queer resistance with an urgency that is anything but incidental to the visual experience. The work belongs to a pivotal body of paintings in which Mehretu continues to deepen her engagement with questions of erasure, visibility, and historical accumulation. The mesh substrate introduces a physical translucency that mirrors the thematic concerns of the series, evoking bodies and identities that exist in states of becoming, contested presence, and hard-won assertion. Layers that might read as pure abstraction reward closer attention, yielding traces of source imagery absorbed and transformed through the artist's rigorous process of construction and deliberate obscuration. Currently presented at Marian Goodman Gallery New York, this work represents a significant acquisition opportunity within Mehretu's evolving practice. Her position in major institutional collections worldwide, combined with sustained critical recognition and the particular timeliness of the TRANSpaintings series, makes this a work of both cultural consequence and lasting market relevance for a serious collection.
