Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror Monument
1987
This monumental bronze sculpture commemorates Sultan Mehmed II, the fifteenth-century Ottoman conqueror of Constantinople, captured in a dynamic flying pose above a limestone base. The figure soars horizontally with outstretched arms, embodying victory and triumph, while below stand smaller bronze figures representing attendants or witnesses to the historical moment. Created by sculptor Hüseyin Gezer in 1987, the work combines heroic realism with symbolic gesture, anchoring the composition within a modernist architectural framework featuring a distinctive arched stone portal. Installed in Fatih Park in Istanbul's Fatih district, the monument serves as both public memorial and urban landmark, its monumental scale and dramatic posture asserting cultural and historical significance across the contemporary cityscape.
