Étude du corps humain d'aprés Ingres (after, Study of a Human Body after Ingres 1982)
A visceral and unsettling reimagining of the classical nude, this lithograph in colours on Arches paper sees Bacon distort and compress the human form into a turbulent mass of flesh, stripping away the idealized serenity of Ingres' original. The figure writhes within an ambiguous, painterly space, its contours dissolving and reforming in Bacon's characteristically raw and psychological manner. Rich, layered tones rendered through the lithographic medium underscore the tension between the refined academic tradition Bacon references and his own brutal, existential vision of the body.
