Great Buddha of Bodh Gaya
1989
This monumental sandstone and red granite sculpture depicts Buddha in a seated meditation pose, rendered with serene facial features and flowing robes carved in distinctive concentric circles that emphasize the figure's spiritual calm. Rising majestically from a golden base platform, the colossal work dominates its architectural setting within the temple grounds, framed by lush green foliage on either side. Commissioned in 1989 by Daijuji Temple, the sculpture exemplifies contemporary devotional art while drawing from classical Buddhist iconographic traditions, creating a landmark visible across the landscape of Bodh Gaya. The work combines monumental scale with refined sculptural detail, its warm sandstone tones evoking both ancient temple traditions and modern public commemoration. Situated near the sacred Mahabodhi Temple complex, this Buddha figure serves as both spiritual focal point and testament to late twentieth century religious artistic expression in India.
