Angel of Independence (El Ángel)
1910
Towering above Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, this monumental victory column stands as an iconic symbol of Mexican independence and resilience. Designed by architect Antonio Rivas Mercado and sculptor Enrique Alciati, the composition features a soaring stone shaft crowned with a gilded bronze winged figure, her arms outstretched in triumph. The pale limestone base is anchored by ornamental urns and Classical detailing, while the figure itself gleams in brilliant gold against the sky, visible from considerable distances across the urban landscape. Completed in 1910, the sculpture commemorates Mexico's struggle for freedom and has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Latin America, serving as both a gathering place for citizens and a powerful statement of national pride.
