Casa Milà (La Pedrera)
1912
Casa Milà, popularly known as La Pedrera (The Stone Quarry), stands as a masterwork of Catalan Modernism and one of the early twentieth century's most daring residential buildings. Designed by Antoni Gaudí and completed in 1912, the six-story apartment building eschews traditional geometry in favor of undulating stone façades that ripple like waves across the urban block, with wrought-iron balconies that writhe organically across every floor. The sculptural roof terrace bristles with chimney stacks and ventilation forms that resemble abstract figures or geological formations, while decorative finials crown the composition. The building's load-bearing stone exterior, curved floor plans, and rejection of right angles revolutionized residential architecture and exemplify the biomorphic principles Gaudí developed throughout his career.
