Big Sweep
2006
Big Sweep presents a monumentally scaled, playful reimagining of the humble household broom and dustpan. This painted aluminum and stainless steel sculpture depicts a broom with a yellow handle and dramatically splayed bristles in red, black, and white, leaning into an oversized blue dustpan. Created by renowned Pop Art sculptors Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the work transforms everyday domestic objects into heroic public monuments, inviting viewers to reconsider the poetry hidden in ordinary tools. Installed at the Denver Art Museum plaza, the sculpture exemplifies the artists' signature approach of elevating vernacular subjects through whimsical scale and meticulous craftsmanship, creating an instantly recognizable landmark that engages passing audiences with its bold color palette and ironic celebration of the mundane.
