Yozo Hamaguchi (1909, 2000) was a Japanese printmaker renowned for reviving and mastering the ancient technique of mezzotint, elevating it to a fine art form in the 20th century. Working primarily in Paris, he created luminous, deeply atmospheric prints characterized by rich velvety blacks and subtle gradations of light, often depicting simple objects such as fish, shells, and insects with meditative precision. His extraordinary technical mastery and poetic sensibility earned him international acclaim, including the Grand Prix at the Ljubljana International Print Biennial, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest printmakers of the modern era.
