William T. Williams
American(1942)
William T. Williams is a pioneering African American abstract painter whose bold, rhythmically structured canvases blend geometric precision with expressive energy, drawing on jazz, African American cultural traditions, and the formal concerns of late 1960s abstraction. A central figure in the Black Arts Movement, he was a founding member of the influential artists' collective known as 'Smokehouse Associates,' which created large-scale murals in Harlem. His work is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem, cementing his legacy as one of the most significant abstract painters of his generation.
