William Aiken Walker was an American genre painter best known for his depictions of African American sharecroppers and plantation life in the post-Civil War South. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he spent much of his career traveling along the Mississippi River and throughout the Gulf Coast, selling small paintings to tourists and collectors. His works are widely recognized for their documentary quality and sympathetic portrayal of freedmen and their daily lives.
