Willi Baumeister (1889, 1955) was a pioneering German abstract painter whose work synthesized modernist influences from Cubism, Constructivism, and Surrealism into a deeply personal visual language. He developed a distinctive style characterized by enigmatic figure-like forms, rich textures, and a sense of primordial myth, often incorporating sand and other materials into his paint surfaces. Despite being labeled 'degenerate' by the Nazi regime and forbidden from exhibiting, he continued to work secretly and became one of the most influential figures in postwar German abstraction.
