Thomas Gainsborough R.A. (1727, 1788) was one of the most celebrated British painters of the 18th century, renowned for his elegant portraits of aristocracy and gentry as well as his lyrical landscape paintings. A founding member of the Royal Academy, he developed a distinctive loose, feathery brushwork that set him apart from contemporaries such as Sir Joshua Reynolds. His dual mastery of portraiture and landscape made him one of the most sought-after artists of Georgian England.
