Takashi Arai

Takashi Arai is a Japanese photographer born in 1988, known for his meticulous use of the daguerreotype process to document sites of historical trauma, nuclear catastrophe, and collective memory. His work engages deeply with themes of mortality, time, and the physicality of the photographic object, often focusing on locations affected by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the Fukushima disaster. Arai is considered one of the most significant contemporary practitioners of the daguerreotype, elevating an archaic 19th-century medium to address urgent 21st-century concerns.
