Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. His highly charged compositions emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, referencing classical and Christian history in service of the Counter-Reformation. He was a prolific painter of altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and mythological subjects, as well as a designer of tapestry cartoons and frontispieces.
