Works
The Senufo people of Côte d'Ivoire have a rich tradition of figurative sculpture, producing powerful male figures used in initiation ceremonies, divination, and funerary rites within the Poro society. These carved wooden figures, known as 'deble' or 'rhythm pounders,' are among the most iconic expressions of West African art, characterized by their elongated forms, geometric abstraction, and deeply scarified surfaces. Created by specialized carvers within the Kpelie tradition, these works have been highly sought after in international auction markets since the early twentieth century.
