Rick Lowe is an American artist and activist best known for founding Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas in 1993, a community arts initiative that transformed a block of shotgun houses in a historically African American neighborhood into a cultural and social space. His practice blurs the boundaries between art, social activism, and community engagement, using urban space as a medium to address issues of race, poverty, and cultural preservation. Lowe has been recognized as a MacArthur Fellow and is widely regarded as a pioneer of socially engaged and community-based art.
