Ram Kumar (1924, 2018) was one of India's most celebrated modernist painters, known for his deeply evocative abstract landscapes inspired by the ghats of Varanasi. Initially a figurative artist influenced by his studies in Paris under Fernand Léger and André Lhote, he gradually shifted toward abstraction, using muted, earthy tones to convey existential solitude and spiritual desolation. His works have achieved record-breaking prices at major auction houses including Christie's, Sotheby's, and Pundole's.
