Voulkos revolutionized American ceramics by bringing Abstract Expressionist sensibilities to clay, creating monumental, gestural sculptures that challenged the craft/fine art divide. His stacked forms and slashed surfaces from the 1950s-60s influenced generations of artists and are held in major collections including MoMA and the Smithsonian. He is widely considered the father of the contemporary ceramic sculpture movement.
