Ming Smith is a pioneering American photographer known as the first African American woman to have her work acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Working primarily from the 1970s onward, she is celebrated for her evocative, painterly black-and-white photographs that capture Black life, culture, and community with a deeply personal and poetic sensibility. A member of the influential Kamoinge Workshop, her work blurs the line between photography and fine art through experimental darkroom techniques and a luminous, impressionistic aesthetic.
