Leon Schulman Gaspard (1882, 1964) was a Russian-American painter celebrated for his vibrant, jewel-toned depictions of exotic cultures, nomadic peoples, and landscapes from Siberia, North Africa, the Far East, and the American Southwest. Born in Vitebsk, Russia, he studied in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens before settling in Taos, New Mexico, where he became an influential figure in the Taos art colony. His richly detailed canvases are prized at auction for their luminous color and ethnographic subject matter.
