Jan Lebenstein

Jan Lebenstein (1930, 1999) was a Polish painter known for his haunting, expressive figurative works that blend abstraction with existential symbolism. He gained international recognition after winning the prestigious Paris Biennale prize in 1959, which led to his emigration to France. His signature 'Axial Figures' series depicts fragmented, totemic human forms that explore themes of identity, mortality, and the human condition.
