Jamini Roy (1887, 1972) was a pioneering Indian modernist painter who drew inspiration from Bengali folk art traditions, particularly the Kalighat pat style, to develop a bold, distinctive aesthetic characterized by simplified forms, thick outlines, and earthy pigments. He deliberately moved away from Western academic training to embrace indigenous visual vocabularies, creating iconic depictions of rural figures, Hindu deities, and Christian subjects. His work commanded significant attention in international auction markets, with his tempera and oil paintings on cloth and board achieving strong results at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Indian auction houses.
