Esaias van de Velde was a pioneering Dutch Golden Age painter born in Amsterdam around 1587, widely regarded as one of the founding figures of the naturalistic Dutch landscape tradition. He worked primarily in Haarlem and later The Hague, producing influential winter scenes, cavalry skirmishes, and tonal landscapes that broke from the earlier Flemish mannerist style. His work profoundly influenced contemporaries such as Jan van Goyen and shaped the course of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting.
