The ceremonial adze from Mangaia, Cook Islands represents one of the most distinctive forms of Polynesian ritual art, crafted by skilled artisans of the Mangaian culture between approximately the 18th and 19th centuries. These objects functioned as sacred implements associated with the god Tane and were used in religious ceremonies, combining functional tool forms with elaborate basalt heads and finely plaited sennit bindings. Highly prized by early European collectors, Mangaian adzes are considered masterworks of Pacific Island craftsmanship and are held in major ethnographic and art museum collections worldwide.
