Brett Whiteley (1939, 1992) was one of Australia's most celebrated and internationally recognised painters, known for his intensely expressive, sensual, and often autobiographical works. His style fused elements of abstraction, figuration, and gestural expressionism, drawing on influences ranging from Francis Bacon to Zen Buddhism, and he frequently explored themes of landscape, the human body, addiction, and spirituality. Whiteley achieved international acclaim early in his career, winning the Archibald, Wynne, and Sulman prizes multiple times, and his Sydney Harbour paintings remain iconic symbols of Australian art.
