Takeo Yamaguchi (1903, 2000) was a pioneering Japanese abstract painter whose work bridged Eastern sensibility and Western modernism. Known for his bold, stark compositions characterized by thick impasto textures and a restrained palette, often dominated by deep blacks, reds, and earth tones, he became one of the most significant figures in postwar Japanese abstraction. His paintings evoke a meditative tension between void and presence, drawing on influences from his studies in Paris as well as traditional Korean and Japanese aesthetics.
